Sentimental Algorithms

Computational, parametric 3D simulations (2024)

Identified problem space:

Memories are like fleeting moments- present in mind, yet slipping away tangibly.
However, we as designers can utilize creative technology to
preserve these fragile moments of time.

How can we conceptualize and express elements of sentimentality?
This experimental project explores 3 themes of memory and identity, shaped by Stacey’s upbringing across multiple countries and cities.

Project video:

Development team:

 - Stacey Cho  Design Engineer, from initial concepts to final renders
- Claire Kim   Contributor, "tteokbokki" 4th algorithm from Nostalgia
- Jessica Situ  Contributor, "piano" 5th algorithm from Nostalgia

Development Process:

Work flow:  ideations - prototyping - iterations - simulations render

Grasshopper, Rhino 8 CAD, Unity, Maya, Substance Painter, Premiere Pro

Reflections:

I often use technology to try capture some of the most "primitive" feelings at heart, such as nostalgia. As someone who has grown up in 4 countries and attended 9 schools, the many past encounters with individuals within my life has shaped the way I interact with the world on a daily basis.

This was the first time I tried to conceptualize some of those abstract emotions through a
computational approach, and the 3rd theme, Years of the Snake is one of my foundational projects leading up to the Born in the Year of the Snake (2026) simulation.
